BioSpace25, scheduled for February 10–14, 2025, at ESA-ESRIN in Frascati, Italy, marks the first edition of a series of conferences aimed at integrating Satellite Remote Sensing (SRS) into biodiversity research, monitoring, and policy implementation. This conference is a collaborative effort by the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Commission, the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON), and the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS), with support from various partner organizations.

The primary objectives of BioSpace25 are to present state-of-the-art SRS methodologies, explore integration into biodiversity research, address critical biodiversity challenges and foster collaborative efforts.

Key scientific discussion topics include:

  • Enhancing the fundamental understanding of biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics.

  • Exploring the links between biodiversity and ecosystem integrity.

  • Assessing the status of ecosystems and quantifying the impacts of the main direct drivers of changes.

  • Understanding the adverse impacts of climate change on biodiversity.

  • Investigating the main evolutionary changes of biodiversity and better predicting their trajectories.

  • Implementing transformative changes such as Nature-Based Solutions (NBS).

  • Prioritizing, designing, and monitoring conservation/restoration actions.

The conference will also cover policy-related aspects, including the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, as well as the needs for financial institutions and companies to integrate nature-related risks and opportunities into their decision-making processes (e.g., TNFD).

BioSpace25 will feature:

  • Plenary Sessions: Invited speakers will discuss the importance of Earth Observations in addressing critical biodiversity issues.

  • Thematic Sessions: Based on abstract submissions, these sessions will delve into specific topics within biodiversity and SRS.

  • Workshops: Interactive workshops will provide hands-on experience with SRS tools and methodologies.

  • Poster Sessions: Opportunities for participants to present their research and engage with peers.

Registration details, including fees and deadlines, are available on the official BioSpace25 website. Participants are encouraged to register early to secure their place at this pivotal event.
